Under the Red Tent
A mother-daughter workshop
Date TBA
1-4pm
Instructors: Kate Laidlaw, Amy & Kim Sedgwick
Cost: $98 per mother-daughter duo
As mothers and daughters we are inundated every day with images of impossible female bodies, “empowering” advertisements for birth control medications and menstrual suppression and negative messages about menstruation. It’s no wonder so many of us dread our periods and have fallen out of love with our menstrual cycle, if we even think of it at all. But it can be different for our daughters – and for us!
If you’re not sure how to start the menstruation conversation with your daughter, this afternoon will make it easy. We’ll be using all the senses in this frank, honest, fun, all-out menstruation celebration.
We’ll show our girls why “It’s so good to be a woman” with:
- Personal sharing about first periods and what to expect (remember all that wondering?)
- Honest talk about the media and how to be “critical consumers” when it comes to the messages presented about being a girl and woman
- A little belly dancing!
- Special exercises, stretches and foods for nurturing a female body
- Aromatherapy for the menstrual cycle
- Rites of passage from other cultures and an exercise for coming up with our own ways of treating our cycles and bodies as sacred
- A mini anatomy lesson
Under the Red Tent is an excellent way to present menstruation to your daughter for the first time, especially if you’re not quite sure what to say. It’s also perfect for mother-daughter bonding. Our goal is for menstruating and non-menstruating daughters (and their moms) to leave with a genuine appreciation and affection for their bodies.
